Abstract
Diseases of the heart and blood vessels are the most important causes of death in old age. The National Center of Health Statistics has estimated that life expectancy at birth would gain 18 years in the United States if it were possible to eliminate deaths from cardiovascular-renal diseases, heart diseases, and vascular diseases affecting the central nervous system, which all are predominantly of atherosclerotic origin.
