Abstract
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) has been used as an antiseptic agent in peritonitis both by lavage and by instillation at operation. It is also used to maintain sterility in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Reports on its efficacy have been mixed (Table 1), and this is also the case in experimental peritonitis where results have received reactions varying from enthusiastic approval to outright condemnation. Some of the animal experiments [11, 14] are of no value, as they use dogs, which often have an idiosyncrasy to PVP and die of shock due to histamine release [20], and the effect of PVP-I cannot be ascertained. The most reliable results are with small rodents; apart from Gilmore [8] using rats and mice, and Berard et al. [2] using piglets, all workers report a high mortality, with death often occurring more quickly in treated than in control animals.
