Abstract
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAcChR) can be extracted and purified to homogeneity from fish electroplaques. These organs are regarded as modified skeletal muscles with a very rich innervation of the cholinergic type. Those from the electric ray Torpedo are the richest known source of nAcChR. They contain 12,000–15,000 receptors per μm2 on the postsynaptic membrane.
