Abstract
The halogen floor lamp or torchiere was invented originally in Italy in the mid- 1980s. Recognizing a longstanding consumer preference for indirect light, its creators married a powerful new technology, the high lumen linear halogen lamp, with classic Italian fixture design. The resulting product was sleek, simple, portable, and dimmable, making it an extremely versatile means of illuminating a home or office. The combination proved immediately popular with customers in Europe and the United States, though initial prices of $150 or more kept the products beyond the reach of many buyers.
