Abstract
King George Island — the largest island in the South Shetland Islands archipelago — is included in the phytogeographical province of the maritime Antarctic. The maritime Antarctic also includes the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, up to the southern part of the Marquerite Bay, and the archipelagos of the South Orkney Islands, South Sandwich Islands and Bouvet Øya. In phytogeographical terms, the region occupies the middle position between the continental Antarctic and sub-Antarctic, as indicated by the number of species in plant communities and the composition of the latter (Lindsay 1976; Filson 1982; Lewis Smith 1988; Olech 1994).
