NPY and Immune Functions: Implications for Health and Disease

Abstract

It is now well established that the nervous system and the immune system are connected in a reciprocal manner. A major pathway in the neuroimmune crosstalk is provided by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Though this interaction is thought to be predominantly mediated by catecholamines (CA), compelling evidence is now available indicating that neuropeptide Y (NPY), released from sympathetic nerves within immune organs, also exerts profound influence on both cellular and humoral immune functions. NPY interferes with critical immune functions, such as differentiation of T helper cells, monocyte mediator release, natural killer (NK) cell activation, and immune cell redistribution. Additionally, NPY also modulates the outcome of CA induced immune alterations in vitro and in vivo, thereby acting as a neuroimmune cotransmitter. In this chapter, we summarize key findings from the interaction between NPY and immune functions and discuss implications for the clinical situation. In addition, fields of future research on this interesting topic are outlined.
