A regional multi-media inventory for heavy metal emissions from stationary combustion sources

Abstract

In this study, the heavy metal emissions (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn) into air and byproducts released by combustion plants in the region of Baden-Württemberg (Germany) are assessed for the base year 1992. The emission sources are classified according to technical criteria with regard to fuel composition, boiler type, operation mode and pollution control devices. For each source category specific methodologies are developed in order to assess the partition factors of the heavy metal streams in the various media. Special emphasis is put on the determination of the emissions from pulverised coal combustion plants representing the major emission source of heavy metals in the region. This detailed methodology is based on the empirical assessment of the enrichment of the elements on fly ash and the removal efficiencies of particulate control and flue gas desulphurisation devices dependent on particle size, and the particle size distribution of the fly ash in raw gas. The regional multi-media inventory is carried out on the basis of the derived partition factors, the mean heavy metal concentrations in the fuel used and the activity data of the emission sources.
