Definition
A biomarker that is informative on the clinical outcome at the time of diagnosis, but independently of therapeutic intervention (e.g., markers of invasion, growth, and metastatic potential). Marker to assess survival probabilities of patients or to detect the aggressive phenotype and determine how the cancer will behave. A classical independent molecular biomarker is the amplified (Amplification) MYCN gene, predicting the prognosis of a subgroup of neuroblastoma patients.
