Definition

Group of naturally occurring or synthetic steroid hormones that includes progesterone. They are important in reproduction, particularly in maintaining the course of pregnancy. They are used in oral contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Synonym progestagen, also gestagen; any of a group of steroid steroid hormones that have progesterone-like activity, having progestational effects (maintaining pregnancy). Progesterone is the naturally occurring progestogen. Used in oral contraceptives and in treating gynecological disorders.
