An Evaluation of the Larval Fish Assemblage in a North Brazilian Mangrove Area

Abstract

The ichthyoplankton community in a north Brazilian mangrove area was dominated numerically by only a few species, a feature common for other estuarine fish populations worldwide. The most abundant taxa were estuarine species. Marine species that use the mangroves as a nursery site occurred only in low numbers at the postflexion stage. The stable size distribution of the dominant estuarine species indicated continuous transport out of the mangroves by tidal currents. The temporal trend of each species was influenced to a great degree by its life history strategy. The temporal variability of the mangrove ichthyoplankton assemblage was determined by freshwater inputs resulting in a more complex community structure in the intermediate season.
