Abstract

The twentieth century can as properly be called the age of organic chemistry as it can the atomic age. The dramatic increase in the production of synthetic fibers, processed foods, pesticides, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and a thousand other materials has completely altered our immediate human environment and provided a wealth of new materials. But it has also transformed our natural environment both intentionally and unintentionally.
