Study of the Cooperative Jahn — Teller Phase Transition in Cesium Copper Chloride by Channeling of He — Ions

Abstract

Development of channeling technique has led to a number of important applications in studies of single crystals. We have investigated crystals of CsCuCl3. This compound has a hexagonal perovskite structure and undergoes a cooperative Jahn-Teller phase transition at TC = 423 K 1). Below this temperature the crystal has the hexagonal spacegroup P61.22, above TC the symmetry changes to P63 /mmc approximately 2). We report here on experiments, in which the phase transition vas shown directly by means of the channeling effect. Moreover applicability of the channeling theory to hexagonal crystal systems has been tested.
