Racist Beliefs and the Importance of Cultural Competence

Abstract

In this chapter, the author discusses the relationship between racist beliefs, post-racist beliefs, and race-based aggression. The author asserts that racist and post-racist beliefs often precede racist microaggressions and macroaggressions. In other words, microaggressors and macroaggressors usually hold racist or post-racist beliefs before they commit a microaggression or macroaggression. The chapter also discusses cultural competence as the antidote to racist and post-racist beliefs.
