Definition
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale is a 20-item self-report measure of depressive symptoms, which was originally designed for use in community samples in epidemiological studies. The scale has since been validated as a screening tool for major depressive disorder (MDD) and been revised with the development of the CESD-R to capture the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) definition of MDD.
Overview
The CES-D
The CES-D was developed in 1971 at the Center for Epidemiologic Studies of the National Institute of Mental Health (Radloff 1977). The CES-D was initially designed to assess depressive symptoms in community samples, with an emphasis on depressed mood.
