Abstract

Noncompliance or nonadherence is a well-known but still underestimated problem in pharmacological treatment in general and in neuropsychopharmacological therapy in detail. Approximately 50% of all patients with chronic diseases exhibit poor compliance regarding drug therapy. Poor adherence is a worldwide problem of striking magnitude. Increasing the effectiveness of adherence interventions might have a far greater impact than any improvement in specific medical treatments. Psychoeducation is effective and has the potential to reduce the rate of nonadherence significantly.
