Abstract
Drawing on postmodern conceptions, a definition of discourse is put forward. Discourse is seen as way of understanding the politics of the everyday world, a realm that is labeled living politics. E.P. Thompson’s critique of Louis Althusser in the 1970s is used to illustrate positions with regard to the discourse approach, setting the stage for a discussion of human nature, and the role of discourse in creating the individual self.
