Abstract

A 16-year-old with VACTERL syndrome is scheduled to undergo a bladder augmentation surgery. The case brings up issues related to electrolyte disturbances in patients with renal impairment. Questions also explore the impact of renal failure on other critical physiological parameters. The case then discusses appropriate monitoring and techniques for providing anesthesia. Issues related to volume status are accented. Pharmacokinetics and postoperative care are also discussed.
