Abstract

Coarctation of the aorta is a part of a generalized arteriopathy with typical circumscript narrowing of the aorta, most commonly located in the area of insertion of the ductus arteriosus. Due to the widespread availability of timely repair we are experiencing increasing numbers of pregnancies in women with previous corrected coarctation. Moreover, unrecognized aortic coarctation may also present for the first time during pregnancy. Treatment options, conservative, surgical or interventional, depend on the haemodynamic impact of the coarctation, the patient´s symptoms, the degree of upper limb arterial hypertension, the gestational age and the potential for foetal compromise due to restricted uteroplacental perfusion. Treatment decision should be made by multidisciplinary team.
