Abstract
Increases in coal consumption by both domestic and foreign users are anticipated in the future due to the decline of inexpensive oil. Greater demands will be placed on existing transportation systems to move to market the abundant reserves of coal in the United States. Simultaneously, lesser known modes such as slurry pipelines will have to share the transportation load. This paper contends that in the national interest the development of both rail and slurry pipeline is vital. The nation should stimulate the capacity of coal hauling railroads while encouraging the construction of coal slurry pipelines.
