Abstract

Francisco Garces (1738 -1781) a Franciscan missionary-explorer is considered to be the first European visitor to the Mojave Desert. He was certainly the first to document his extensive travels in the region and his encounters with the Native American population. Garces estimated the Mojave population in 1776 at approximately 3,000, by 1963 Lorraine M. Sherer’s research revealed that Fort Mojave and the Colorado River reservation had a combined population of 988.
