Abstract
The Caribbean islands face ever-increasing challenges to their tourism industries, particularly the decline in tourist demand for the traditional ‘sun, sand, and sea’ tourism offered in this region. Given most Caribbean islands’ overwhelming dependence on tourism for economic growth, this decline is alarming. This article compares tourism development on the islands of Martinique and the Commonwealth of Dominica to further explore reasons for the decline of tourism and to examine the potential success of ecotourism to revive flagging Caribbean tourism industries.
