Observation skills are one’s ability to see, understand, and communicate what one has seen. It is the difference between hearing a trumpet and understanding that it is a call to battle. As it applies to the visual arts, observation skills are no less important to an artist than a soldier’s ability to recognize audio military signals (Figs. 9.1 and 9.2).
