Abstract

Intermetallic compounds form when two or more metallic elements or metalloids occupy distinct sites in a specific structure. For example, AB3 is a disordered alloy (solid solution) when A and B occupy the sites of an fcc lattice more or less at random, but it becomes an intermetallic compound with the ordered AuCu3 structure when the A atoms are all located on one of the four sc sublattices, so that each A is surrounded by 12 B nearest-neighbours.
