Abstract
Throughout this chapter, the term homosexual/heterosexual ratio of feelings will usually be employed in preference to sexual orientation, as common usage has caused the latter term to carry the implication that subjects’ sexual orientation can only be one of three categories (heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual). Evidence will be advanced that such feelings are distributed not categorically but dimensionally in the population. Marked resistance has been shown not only by the general public but also by sex researchers to accepting the evidence that the majority of the population who are or have been aware of homosexual feelings are predominantly heterosexual (McConaghy, 1987a).
