Abstract

While the education of the public is in the hands of the galleries, the education of the goldsmiths is the domain of the metalsmith teachers. Although a number of the goldsmiths best known in the field carved out a road to success through experimentation, trial and error, and the occasional workshop, an equal number came up through a more formal educational system. Partly because the field is still quite young, a rather small number of teachers has played a significant role in setting standards, guiding artistic inspiration, and giving the students the necessary technical base to carry out their ideas and find their own voices.
