Abstract

Surgical relief of the full overhanging eyelid and of puffiness and wrinkling of the lower eye-lid was undertaken by Arabic surgeons of the tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. (Fig. 1) according to Sichel (59) writing in the Annales d’Oculistique. Sichel in 1844 was not the first French surgeon to have described these conditions, but with unusual scholarly integrity he referred to the earlier publications of Dupuytren (23).
