Correlation of the Depth Effect on Film-Boiling Heat Transfer in Liquid Helium II

Abstract

The quantum-liquid characteristics of helium II (He II) are evident in film boiling as two macroscopic effects. First, audible noise is emitted spasmodically from the test-surface region under many (but not all) test conditions. The presence of noise impedes heat transfer considerably. The noise phenomenon has been noted by a number of investigators [1–3]. Only Lemieux and Leonard [1] have characterized the effect for a range of test conditions.
