Abstract
Au/Co/Au and Au/Cu/Co/Cu/Au sandwiches are prepared by slow evaporation of the metals from tungsten crucibles in a ultrahigh vacuum (P < 10-9 Torr) deposition unit. The first gold layer is annealed at about 440 K. This substrate is polycrystalline, textured, with a mean lateral size of the crystallites around 2000 A. Its surface is oriented (111) and atomically flat. Thicknesses of Au, Cu and Co layers are respectively 250 Å, 30 Å and from 2 to 80 Å, and are controlled by a quartz oscillator. The growth is followed by in-situ resistivity measurements [1].
