Abstract

The success (Boyer et al., 1977) of the chemiosmotic hypothesis (Mitchell, 1961) has led to the general insight that metabolism (chemistry) and transport (physics) are connected by two rather than by one tie. Transport is no longer parallel to metabolism—it is intimately linked to it at the level of oxidative or photophosphorylation.
