Theory of Phonons on Clean and Adsorbed Surfaces

Vibrations at Surfaces

Abstract

We review the main aspects of vibrations on clean and adsorbed surfaces. Surface acoustical modes (Rayleigh waves) are discussed, in particular their dispersion and the modifications due to adsorption. The main physical effects associated with surface optical phonons are also examined.

The main results for the vibrational quantities like the specific heat, the entropies and the atomic mean square displacements are also studied.

The elastic interaction energies of one or two defects near clean and adsorbed surfaces are given.

The stability of surfaces with and without adsorbate (relaxation, thermal expansion,...) are analyzed in relation with vibrational properties.
