Abstract

Rearrangements between mammalian X chromosomes and autosomes are valuable tools in the study of X inactivation, since they provide a karyotype in which the physical continuity of the X chromosome is interrupted. In reciprocal X-autosome translocations, T(X;A)’s, there are three chromosomes within each cell of a heterozygote — instead of the usual two — that contain X-chromosome material. This circumstance may be put to use in addressing questions of X-differentiation mechanisms and randomness.
