Abstract

Looking back, in an Aristotelian manner, at prime motives, I do not recall in the schoolboy I still was in 1933 any inclination for biological research, or, for that matter, the study of the relationship between the brain and the endocrine glands. On the other hand, a brief survey of my past convinces me that cerebral problems played a decisive part in the shaping of my career. These were annoying headaches that suddenly started when I was between 15 and 16 years of age and which decided my future by obliging me to leave the mathematics class as this was held to be the cause of my trouble! It was, therefore, as a philosophy student which I then became, that I enrolled in the Medical School. Of course, my belated choice of career was not strange with my family background. Neither, I think, was my rapid decision to take up biology.
