Abstract

Mucosubstances in the human duodenum are normally secreted from goblet cells in the epithelium of the villi as well as from Brunners glands lying in the submucosa. Histochemical studies have been carried out on epithelial mucins in the digestive tract of human subjects (Lev, 1966), and consist of both neutral and acidic mucins. Electron microscopical studies on mucins in duodenal ulceration have been carried out by Moshel (unpublished data) but quantitative investigations in this field are not documented. This collaborative work was carried out in order,to get quantitative values for any observed changes in the mucosubstances secreted by the normal duodenum both before and after ulceration.
