Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about 50% of all cases (Tomlinson and Corsellis, 1984; Lishman, 1987), and the fourth or fifth most common cause of death; the life expectancy is 5–6 years less than the average in AD with senile onset, and about 15 years less in AD with presenile onset (Katzman, 1986). In view of its high frequency and malignant natural course, AD can be said to be ‘a major killer’ (Katzman, 1986).
