Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to review current diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), to describe some of the published interview schedules which enable cases to be assessed in a structured fashion and to outline some initiatives aimed at standardizing the collection of clinical information. The importance of an accurate diagnosis of AD has already been mentioned in Chapter 3. This chapter will concentrate on clinical aspects of the diagnosis — ancillary investigations will be outlined in other chapters such as neuroimaging (Chapters 23–26), neurophysiological investigations (Chapter 21) and peripheral markers (Chapter 22). Table 18.1 summarizes studies which have assessed the ability of a number of diagnostic criteria to predict Alzheimer pathology at post-mortem.
