Abstract

Aluminum alloys are increasingly used for light-weight construction in the transportation industry. Among the common joining techniques for such materials (riveting, adhesion bonding, clinching) welding is increasing in importance. In contrast to steel welding, there are restricted possibilities when applying post-welding treatments to optimize the material properties of the welded part. Welding parameters, such as the welding energy, determine changes in microstructure, stress and texture states. Hence, the behavior of welded components under static or dynamic loading is strongly influenced by welding parameters. This investigation will show how easy-to-apply ultrasonic techniques can be used to support the optimization of the welding process.
