Electric and Magnetic Fields: An Engineer’s Perspective

Abstract

Much has been written and discussed about electric and magnetic fields. Extensive programs are underway to discover whether these fields can affect our health.

But, engineers face some serious dilemmas in dealing with the electromagnetic field issue. A number of scenarios concerning what field characteristics might cause effects have been postulated. Until more evidence is available, the engineer does not really know what to fix, or even if anything needs to be fixed at all.

Presently, a program of research is underway to provide an electrical engineering characterization of field magnitudes, sources, time and space variations, and other important parameters. This work will be helpful to the medical research community in understanding the nature of fields. It will also help identify possible options for reducing field strengths, if that is deemed necessary.
