Abstract
Malignant tumors may exhibit a sharp discrepancy between rates of growth and rates of cell proliferation, which denotes an important role for cell loss in neoplastic growth. Cells can die by two morphologically and biochemically distinct modes, necrosis and apoptosisl. The occurrence of necrosis is well recognized, particularly in large solid neoplasms.
