Abstract

In northern Sweden 3.8 million ha of the land surface is covered by mires, while another 1.7 million ha consists of moist or wet forest (i.e. forests with a high water table) (Svensson et al., 1989). The area occupied by wet forest, particularly the damp, shady type of late successional spruce, is steadily being reduced as a result of various forest practices such as clear-felling and drainage. SOU (1978) predicted that these operations would affect half of the wet forests existing in Sweden by the end of the century.
