Abstract

Few disorders elicit as much curiosity and/or outrage as the sexual deviations, or paraphilias. In recent years, a number of factors have contributed to the increase in professional and public interest in aberrant sexual proclivities that, for many years, were largely ignored. First, a number of widely publicized cases involving sexual abuse of children have alerted and alarmed the public about this problem. Second, recent evidence suggests that the prevalence of sexual offenses, based on reports by victims (e.g., Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987; Russell, 1983) as well as offenders (e.g., Abel et al., 1987), is much higher than previously believed. In fact, it appears that previous official reports grossly underestimate the prevalence and incidence of sexual offenses (Abel et al., 1987; Koss et al., 1987). Third, mental health professionals increasingly are being consulted for assistance in the management of the victims and perpetrators of sexual offenses. Consequently, paraphilia has become a topic of major importance.
