Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to the contents of the book and a sound framework for thinking about benchmarking. We discuss questions like: What is traditional benchmarking and how do state-of-the-art methods covered in this book differ from traditional benchmarking? How common is benchmarking and what general applications of benchmarking can we distinguish?
