Abstract

Dermatologists and ophthalmologists commonly see patients with itchy, red, flaky eyelids. Eyelid dermatitis is a clinical term that encompasses more than one inflammatory disease affecting the eyelid skin. Determination of the underlying etiology is essential to treatment. Examination and history evaluation will establish the correct differential diagnosis. Diagnostic considerations and response to empiric treatment will dictate if diagnostic tests are needed, which should lead to the correct primary diagnosis. Regardless of etiology, basic considerations and recommendations are helpful when treating patients with eyelid dermatitis.
