Abstract
The Dredging Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (B.A.) has figured prominently in almost every account of the development of biological oceanography written during the past century. Not only was its work the first systematic attempt to document the occurrence and distribution of benthic marine animals in British (or any other) waters, but it also represents the transition from a situation in which science was almost entirely the province of the amateur financed either by himself or by a private patron, to one in which some projects could no longer be underwritten by individuals, but had to be financed by government.
