Abstract
Although emphasis has been laid on the recent advances in care programs for spinal injuries with paralysis, it must be recognized that other pathologic causes account for approximately one-third of all cases. To this must be added those due to secondary malignancy, which account for about one-sixth of all cases. Enthusiastic management of spinal trauma must encourage similar motives in those caring for individuals in this second group, who have common secondary problems related to bladder, bowel, skin, spinal deformity, and general rehabilitation. If life is preservable by acute care, then long-continued care is essential. So often when the onset of paralysis has been slow, a diagnosis is not easily made.
