Abstract
Over recent years there has been an increase in the number of patients presenting with marked anxiety related to travelling in airplanes. These can be divided into two major groups: the first consists of patients with multiple phobias of which air travel is only one - agoraphobia is common in these patients; the second major group consists of patients with one specific phobia - “airplane phobia.”
During a period of 3 years, 43 patients presented to a Psychiatric Clinic with symptoms of difficulty in airplane travel. Following initial psychiatric assessment and psychological testing, they received treatment with hypnosis.
This paper presents psychological and clinical details of these patients. The treatment approach and results of this ongoing study, with particular reference to the role of hypnosis, is discussed.
