Abstract
An investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of various engine deposits on octane requirements (OR). Our major finding, namely, that intake valve and intake port deposits can have as great an effect on OR as combustion chamber deposits, has been previously reported.1 It has long been known2 that maldistribution of fuel and air among cylinders of an engine can have a substantial effect on the octane requirements of the cylinders. Hence, it was of interest to determine if engine deposits have an effect on mixture distribution among cylinders (which in turn could affect the octane requirements of the individual cylinders). Accordingly, this paper first discusses the effect of air and fuel distribution among cylinders on octane requirements and then summarizes our overall observations of the effect of fuel factors on OR, using a recent engine test as an example.
