Abstract

The pump performance of the heart depends on the contractile characteristics of the myocytes and the geometric organization of the myocytes to make up the macroscopic pump structure. Under steady state conditions the beat to beat force which the myocytes contribute to the development of intraventricular pressure depends on the following: 1) excitation contraction coupling (ECC) events; 2) the integrity of the contractile system (actin and myosin); and 3) high energy phosphate stores and production. This review addresses some aspects of the excitation contraction coupling events.
