In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer

Abstract

When selecting the proper media for human in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), a variety of physiological and biochemical parameters must be considered. Preinsemination oocyte (or egg) culturing and incubation of sperm under conditions conducive to motility maintenance, capacitation and the acrosome reaction are essential for successful sperm-egg interaction. Once fertilization has occurred, proper incubation conditions must be met to support early preimplantation development. Although there is much yet to learn about the optimal conditions for oocyte, egg, sperm and embryo culturing in human IVF-ET, a number of criteria have been shown to be essential for success. These criteria will be addressed only briefly here, and the reader is encouraged to examine several excellent reviews (Edwards, 1980; Mastroianni and Biggers, 1981; Wolf and Quigley, 1984) and Chapter 18 in this book dealing with the role of environmental factors on embryonic development.
