Studies on the Distribution and Cytochemistry of Nucleolar Silver Stained Proteins in Ring Shaped Nucleoli

Abstract

Silver stained proteins (SSPs) characteristic of NORs are present either in fibrillar centers (FCs) and/or in nucleolar regions containing RNP dense fibrillar components (Hernandez-Verdun et al., 1978; Daskal et al., 1980). FCs are considered to represent inactive parts of NORs (Goessens and Lepoint, 1979). Active portions of NORs are believed to be at FCs and in nucleolar regions which possess RNP dense fibrillar components (DFCs) containing the newly transcribed RNA (Bouteille et al., 1974; Smetana and Busch, 1974; Goessens and Lepoint, 1979; Raska et al., 1989). The present study was undertaken to provide more information on the distribution of SSPs in nucleolar regions adjacent to FCs. Ring shaped nucleoli of mature leukemic lymphocytes are convenient for such studies, since they contain one large fibrillar center surrounded by DFCs.
