Abstract

The recent influx of Haitians into the United States, prompted by the difficult political and economic situation in Haiti culminating in the February 1986 change of government, has brought their plight into the focus of the American public and has channeled them into the sphere of the American health system. There are over 500,000 Haitians in the United States, the majority of whom are concentrated in large urban areas. Forty percent are illegal immigrants, having arrived by precarious boat passage. To present and discuss the perspective of health care of Haitians and to advise the family physician about a meaningful approach, it is appropriate to present some pertinent facts about Haiti.
